Parks and Recreation I

'The Coppice Recreation Ground occupies one of those remarkable little valleys around the Mapperley Range which must have been formed in the Great Ice Age, and it is not unlikely that clay and stone have been removed by brickyard and building operations. When the Robin Hood Rifle movement was started in the middle of the last century, this valley was used as a Rifle Range, and partly adapted therefor, until an unfortunate bullet hit someone on the top of the bank. ... The ground has been turfed, seats and a shed have been provided, and here a tired man may rest in the quietness of nature, protected from violent winds and noisy wheels and dusty roads...'

From The Gardens, Parks and Walks of Nottingham and District by Robert Mellors (1926)
